Big, Beautiful, Black and No Wave

ESG at the Echo 2/24/06

Last night's ESG show at the Echo did not disappoint. Those big, beautiful women were so on and so together I almost forgot the year was 2006. (And I would have had it not been for all the stupid digital cameras and camera phones!) Keep in mind, these are some lovely, large African American women who's first album was produced by Martin Hannett. The same dude that produced Joy Division. It was certainly an interesting reaction from the mostly white crowd, most of whom were completely versed in the No Wave art funk ESG is so loved for by hip hop artists and dj's. No less interesting was the reaction from ESG, who no doubt were slightly surprised by the young, hipster crowd that knew all their songs so well they all had favorites to yell out. (Most of them wanted to hear Erase You, which for some reason they didn’t play. Even with 2 encores.) Leave it to ESG to get a typically indifferent Los Angeles crowd to dance the whole show, playing the dj favorite "Move" towards the end. This turned out to be most amusing. Half the white kids there had no rhythm, as well as no shame. ESG also brought out their share of hipster celebs. My friend and I were groovin' along to the music when she turns to me and says, "Do you realize we're sandwiched between girls that have hooked up with Vincent Gallo?" I looked at her funny, but noticed P.J. Harvey was standing right next to her and then I turned to the right to see who the girl elbowing me was. Turns out it was Chloe Sevigny. Um, yeah, even Chloe Sevigny doesn't get to elbow me out of my dancing room.

Grammys, Olympics, What next?

Well, in my streak of failure to update, I haven't made a proper Grammy post. It's pretty much to late to do, but I really felt I should heir my grievances. I honestly only watched the last hour of the Grammys. I caught Paul McCartney on stage with Linkin' Park. What? First of all, it was weird enough to see someone I went to high school with on stage, accepting a Grammy. Then They get to be onstage with a Beatle? If they were actually good, I'd be happy for them. I don't want to say Mike Shinoda is undeserving, because he was actually a really cool guy. Brad Delson, on the other hand, was kind of an ass. I also managed to catch that atrocious tribute to Sly and the Family Stone. I officially no longer like the Black Eyed Peas. Or maybe I should just not like Will. I. Am. I'm pretty sure it was one of the other guys that smoked me out on that video shoot. Anyway, it's not really all his fault. None of the people in that tribute were good, except Sly Stone and he was scary with is mohawk.

On to the Olympics. I just wanted to give a congratulations to Shaun White and Danny Kass. As if Mr. White wasn't already all over Mtv, now he's all over network TV as well. It's okay though. I like the Flying Tomato, even though I still think his mistake in the prelims was to gain more pres time and make his win more exciting. And then there's Danny Kass with his second Silver medal. Everyone going, yeah, well he already has one from Salt Lake. We want Shaun White. Poor Danny.

Oh How I Have Missed Thee My Lovely Prog Rock!

Go to this:

Wolfmother- Spaceland 2/13/06

I have a theory that all things Australian are good. They have cute guys, cute accents and El Caminos. So far my friends have disproved my theory by pointing out Silverchair (whom I personally like) and the Vines. I usually counter with AC/DC. I’m hoping Wolfmother will get me two and two. From what I’ve heard so far, Wolfmother has a solid bluesy prog-rock sound. It’s kind of like if you gave a kid some Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd Records, threw in some White Stripes and The Sights and then asked the kid to start a band. Or maybe if you mix Detroit with Los Angeles you get Australian? Wolfmother came to LA in may 2005 to record their debut album; the studios they recorded in housed the ghosts of Pink Floyd’s The Wall and Nirvana’s Nevermind. Hopefully what’s translated to pretty solid sound will be even stronger live. I’m especially curious to see them live because I can’t decide if the singer sounds more like Robert Plant or Jack White and I really need that mystery solved. Plus, there’s nothing I like better than seeing a good prog-rock band live and I haven’t heard a prog rock band with a sound that heavy since I followed the Secret Machines around.

Kanye report:
Well, Kanye didn't exactly work out like I had hoped. Apparenty I'm not as important as Tom Cruise! Honestly, if he was there, they're lucky I didn't go. I really dislike Tom Cruise. I'm glad I liked Michelle Williams better than Katie Holmes. Take that, Joey! Jen has an Oscar nomination! And a sane boyfriend/baby daddy.
